PPDD in the Community

The Pikes Peak Derby Dames are active in the community, donating time, money, and even bout tickets to charities and nonprofit organizations in the Pikes Peak region. Here are some of the ways that PPDD gives back to the community.

Charity of the Month

Our August/September charity is Operation School Bell.

Operation School Bell is a branch of the Assistance League that provides new school clothing for children in low-income families. The kids receive shirts, jeans, underwear, and even winter coats, hats and gloves, as well as hygiene kits and some school supplies.

Operation School Bell will have an info/donation table and representative at our August 28 bout, and we will be holding a drawing for fabulous prizes to benefit this cause.

Past Charitable Donations/Events

St. Baldrick's

At our March 27, 2010 doubleheader, several PPDD members (including BlunderWoman, seen in photo) and volunteers shaved their heads to raise money for St. Baldrick's, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research.

Total Raised by PPDD's St. Baldrick's Event

$6,780

National Mill Dog Rescue

PPDD donated 25% of our 2009 Skate-a-Thon to the National Mill Dog Rescue, a Colorado organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing mill dogs, and educating the general public about the realities of the commercial dog breeding industry.

Gift Cards for Homeless and Runaway Youth

We collected gift cards for Urban Peak, an organization that works with homeless and runaway youth between the ages of 15 to 21 in Colorado Springs. They provide a safe and caring place so that youths can begin to work on getting off the streets. The gift cards were distributed at Christmas time.

Skate-a-Thon

Urban Peak also benefitted from our second annual Skate-a-Thon on December 3, 2008. The Derby Dames in conjunction with Mama's Bad Derby Girls (Junior league) raised a total of $5381.70.

PPDD Backpack Drive

PPDD held a backpack drive to benefit foster children in the 2008-2009 school year. Nearly 100 backpacks were collected!
