Pikes Peak Roller Derby was founded in 2005, when our founder, Slugs-N-Kisses, saw an article about an edgy new sport that recently sprung up out of Texas, and decided to start a league here in Colorado Springs. Less than a year later, PPDD held our first “bout” and have never looked back. PPDD is a 501(c)7 nonprofit sports organization, 100% owned and operated by our members. PPDD is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the international governing body of women’s flat track roller derby. WFTDA sets the international standards for rankings, rules, and competition each year, and provides guidance and resources to the sport of flat track derby.
Pikes Peak Roller Derby’s mission is to foster athleticism, personal empowerment, and community relationships through playing and promoting the fast-paced, hard-hitting, competitive sport of women’s flat track roller derby. Pikes Peak Roller Derby provides an equal opportunity for athletes of all skill levels and abilities to succeed by discovering strengths, overcoming weaknesses, and challenging themselves, both on and off the track.
PPRD has five teams: three “home” teams and two “travel” teams.
The Danger Dolls, Candy Snipers, and Killer Queens are the home teams, and only play games at home, sometimes against each other and sometimes against visiting teams from nearby leagues. Every member of PPRD is placed on one of these teams, and are cleared to play in public games once their skills have been evaluated and approved by PPRD training staff.
The All-Stars and Slamazons are our two travel teams, and they exclusively play against teams from other leagues, either at home or away. The All-Stars are our WFTDA charter team made up of our best skaters, and represents the league–and Colorado Springs–in sanctioned games which count towards international rankings and tournament eligibility. The Slamazons are our “B” travel team, which provides competitive play and travel opportunities for higher level skaters who aren’t quite ready for the All-Stars.
Officiating Staff and Volunteers
PPRD is supported by the tireless work and dedication of the many volunteers that help us on a day to day basis. Our skating and non-skating officials, non-skating members, photographers, EMTs, announcers, and other valuable volunteers are a huge part of our league and we can’t thank them enough for all that they do!
