About PPDD Recruit Nights
PPRD holds recruit nights throughout the year. Anyone 18+ interested in joining is invited to learn more about roller derby, our league, and the requirements of being a league member.
During this informational meeting, you will go over league requirements such as practice time, committee work, event attendance, and general league information. All interested skaters will sign up to attend a boot camp which will be scheduled approximately two weeks later, and sign insurance liability release waivers. No skates or gear are required at recruit night.
Do I have to skate to join?
PPRD is always looking for people interested in becoming a skating referee or non-skating official. If you’re interested in being a part of roller derby, but you don’t want to play, consider becoming an official.
If you are an established skater traveling through our area or from a nearby league, our practices are open unless otherwise stated. If you would like to join us for a practice, contact us at least 24 hours before your visit. Skaters should have current WFTDA insurance (please provide number) and WFTDA league affiliation. The drop-in fee is $10.
New drop-in skaters are invited to come to a non-scrimmage night for their first practice.
** each practice will cost $10 if you are not a member of the Pikes Peak Roller Derby. **
Experienced Skaters & Transfers
If you are an experienced skater that has missed recruit night, you still have the opportunity to join. Please contact us for information on how to schedule an assessment or to learn about the transfer process.
If you are a potential transfer and would like to attend a practice, contact us at least 24 hours before your visit. Skaters should have current WFTDA insurance (please provide number) and WFTDA league affiliation. The drop-in fee is $10. Upon joining PPRD, you will have those funds deducted from your joining fees.
Preparing for Boot Camp
Interested skaters are highly encouraged to brush up on their skills before attending boot camp as you will be required to pass a basic skating skills test in order to join the league. Skate City holds public skate sessions several times a week. Thursday night Speed Skate class is especially helpful. There is also an outdoor rink at the El Pomar Youth Sports Park. It’s free and open to the public.
Download the WFTDA “This is Roller Derby” beginner curriculum to get an understanding of what we will be looking for at boot camp and what will be on the skills test if you are invited to join PPRD.
During boot camp, potential skaters will be assessed to determine their skill level, and is a good time for members to determine skater’s attitude, availability, and work ethic to make sure they are a good fit for PPRD.
After boot camp, select skaters will be invited to become a full member of PPRD.
